Some politics

So the Presidential Election is almost over. 22 days left, one more debate, then we vote and wait.

I frankly donapos;t get why theyapos;re having the last debate so far away from the end of the election. I would imagine a debate during the last week would be most beneficial for the voters, but whatever.

Obamaapos;s doinapos; pretty well right now. Good to know my prediction was wrong. Good to know that Americans arenapos;t as stupid as I imagined.

Itapos;s kind of amusing watching McCain scramble for the right note to hit, like a kid on "Legends of the Hidden Temple" who canapos;t figure out the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Heapos;s hitting Obama on everything he can, most of which Hillary already brought up during the primaries (for those who werenapos;t paying attention, she lost).

The problem is that now McCainapos;s message is incoherent. It seems more like heapos;s playing a game than laying out his ideas and strategies and policies. He sees the polls as a scoreboard. "If I say this about Obama, do my points go up? No? Well, how about this? No? Darn."

Then thereapos;s the Palin problem. She is a problem for McCain. A big one. Sheapos;s one of those "sounded like a good idea at the time" candidates. People liked her at the RNC (delivering a speech she didnapos;t write) when they didnapos;t know her. Now we know her. We know that sheapos;s a radical social conservative with no experience in anything who canapos;t keep her mouth shut.

Palinapos;s interviews were some of the most entertaining political television moments Iapos;ve seen in my life. Palin saying that her proximity to Russia and Canada gave her foreign policy experience. Palin not knowing what the Bush Doctrine was. Palin being unable to name a magazine she reads ("All of them"?) to stay informed. Palin being unable to name an example of McCain being "mavericky" behavior other than Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Palin claiming that they were winning when they were several points behind and then backpedaling saying she doesnapos;t pay attention to the polls. Palin saying that under her policies, a girl raped by her father would have to give birth to her unwanted incestuous child, but she would be counseled. Oh goody.

And it didnapos;t stop. While most people say she did OK in the debate, and Iapos;m inclined to agree, she still had some pretty hysterical moments. I still canapos;t believe she used the terms "Joe Six-Pack" and "Hockey Moms" in a Vice Presidential Debate. Not to mention the winking, the unwillingness to defend McCainapos;s record, and saying Obama/Bidenapos;s very well-detailed plan on Iraq was a white flag of surrender after pausing for about 10 seconds, presumably to cycle through whatever mnemonic device she used to remember her talking points.

Now sheapos;s under potential investigation from her own state for violating state ethics laws.

Sheapos;s lucky Obama isnapos;t interested in bringing up petty personal attacks or he would also mention her damning connection to Alaskan secessionists.

McCain shouldnapos;t have picked her. In his defense, he didnapos;t really have a choice in the matter, unfortunately. The Republicans didnapos;t want his pick of Lieberman because heapos;s pro-choice and they wanted a woman to try and win over the jaded Clinton supporters. A shame too. He probably would have won with Lieberman.

But McCainapos;s big tactics have now been nullified. Obamaapos;s inexperienced. Oh wait, so is McCainapos;s VP pick. Obamaapos;s erratic. Oh wait, so is McCainapos;s VP pick. Obama wonapos;t do anything about pork barrel spending and McCain will veto every bill with pork in it. Oh wait, McCain just voted for the bacon-filled bailout bill the other week.

Now McCainapos;s saying we should vote for him because heapos;s a fighter. Oh yay. Thatapos;s exactly what weapos;re looking for. MORE violence As if the wars weapos;re in werenapos;t enough. Heapos;s also saying heapos;s the underdog. Another tactic from Hillary Clintonapos;s playbook (that one didnapos;t work either).

So whatapos;s McCainapos;s best chance? Well, he basically has to offer up better solutions for Americaapos;s current problems than Obama has. Obama outlined a detailed plan earlier on how he plans to help out the middle class during this crisis. Some very comforting plans. McCain says heapos;s still thinking about it.

Obamaapos;s bought a half-hour of TV during prime time on October 29 to do... Something. I donapos;t know. Probably give a big speech of some kind. Regardless, Obamaapos;s ahead and heapos;s not going to wait for McCain to catch up.

And now, the Barack Roll.
